Developmental psychologists study how people change over the lifespan. The research focus in our lab is on age-related changes in the first few years after birth. Never again do humans develop as rapidly as during infancy and early childhood. In addition to the visible physical changes there are striking developments in cognition, social relationships, and emotion. We are particularly interested in early cognitive and social-cognitive development, especially in learning and memory.
Children spend most of their early years sleeping. The ‘Bochum Baby Sleep Study’ aims to show exactly how a baby’s sleep influences their development and how it is linked to the health of the whole family. For this project, the Developmental Psychology team at Ruhr University Bochum is supporting families from pregnancy right through to their child’s second birthday. Expectant mothers who are interested can register to take part online. The research project will run until the end of 2028 and is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. Link to the press release.
